To the teacher

Teachers need to take necessary steps in the welcome back to school day such as making the positive first impressions, getting to know students and their families, communicating expectations, and facilitating a community of learning. They have to capitalize on the first few weeks to set the tone for future learning and good relationships with students

To parents

While children are filled with first-day jitters and sad because the summer is over, parents are filled with thoughts of “How to help them (their kids) prepare for a fresh start?” or “Am I prepared enough?” There are a lot of things that parents have to do to make their kids be ready for school time such as setting up a sleep routine, buying school supplies,...

To the students

It’s actually hard for kids to get back into a regular schedule. They may feel a little anxious on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school

A nice welcome back to school ideas:

Before school starts, teachers prepare a bunch of questionnaires for her students and families to fill out. Some ideal questions may be about their home life, summertime and preferred methods of communication, and use this information to build positive and trusting relationships with each student and family.

6 Welcome back to school team-Building Games that Promote Critical Thinking

Welcome back to school games

If we focus on anything but academics to start the school year — such as culture, opportunity, creativity, relationships and the “why” — we may actually produce a more academically successful student and school year…

Make your incoming students feel at home through fun icebreakers and get-to-know-you activities.

Get-to-know games

  1. Me Too Icebreaker Game!

Arrange students to sit face-to-face in a large circle.

Firstly, a student gives a fact about themselves, for instance, I love Taylor Swift or I love cooking or I have two sisters, etc. It can be an interest, favorite book, singer, hobby, family information. If that statement or fact is true about another student, they simply raise their hand, stand up and say “Me too!”

  1. Fact or Fiction

Arrange students to sit face-to-face in a large circle.

Firstly, a student has to offer two pieces of fact and one piece of fiction about herself/himself. Another student (who raises his/ her hand fastest) will identify which were facts, and which were fiction. The correct guesser goes next. Play is completed when all students have gone.

  1. One Minute Talk

Each student is given a topic from the teacher and they have 60 second talks on anything related to that topic.

  1. I Never

Arrange students to sit face-to-face in a large circle.

Firstly a student says something they’ve never done. Each student thathasdone that thing steps briefly into the center. The game continues until all students have stated something they’ve done.

Critical Thinking Game

Critical Thinking-Welcome back to school games
  1. If You Build it…

First the teacher divides students into teams (each team usually has 3-5 students) and gives them equal amounts of a certain material, like pipe cleaners, blocks, or even dried spaghetti and marshmallows.

Then, give them something to construct.

The key challenge can be variable. For example:

Which team can build the tallest, structurally-sound castle?

Which team can build a castle the fastest?

  1. Minefield

This is a classic team-building game.

The teacher (with help from students) arrange some kinds of obstacles and divide students into teams. Students take turns navigating the ‘minefield’ while blindfolded, with only their teammates to guide them. To make the game more challenging, you can also require students to only use certain words or clues

Some ideal reward for the welcome back to school game:

Free reading time

No homework
